“이번 광주세계수영선수권대회는 저비용 고효율 국제대회의 대표적인 성공모델이 될 것입니다.”
이용섭 광주세계수영선수권대회 조직위원장과 훌리오 마글리오네 국제수영연맹(FINA) 회장은 14일 오후 남부대 주경기장 메인프레스센터에서 내외신 공동 기자회견을 갖고 “광주세계수영대회는 성공을 위한 필요충분조건을 모두 갖췄다”며 이같이 말했다.
먼저 이용섭 위원장은 “194개국 선수단이 펼치는 치열한 경기 내용과 이들이 경기장 밖에서 서로 소통하고 교류하며 나누는 우정과 사랑의 이야기들이 지구촌에 잘 알려질 수 있도록 많이 도와달라”고 부탁했다.
이 위원장은 “이번 광주대회는 역대 최대 규모인 194개국에서 7467명의 선수단(선수 2537명)이 참가함으로써 대회성공의 ‘필요조건’을 갖추었으며, 이미 새로운 스포츠 역사를 쓰고 있다”고 밝혔다.
- “또한 국민적 관심과 성원 속에 입장권도 판매금액 기준 100%(13일 오후 8시 현재 102%, 76억4900만원)를 넘었고, 대회 초반이지만 지난 이틀간의 경기장 관람객도 기대보다 많아 대회 성공의 ‘충분조건’도 충족됐다”고 덧붙였다.
그는 또 “지난 12일 저녁 광주여대 체육관에서 열린 개회식은 작품성과 예술성, 대중성을 모두 담아낸 성공적 개막행사로 평가받고 있다”고 밝혔다.
- 개막공연은 ‘빛의 분수’를 주제로 전 세계의 물들이 ‘빛의 도시, 민주·인권·평화의 도시 광주’에서 만나 하나가 되어 거대한 빛이 되고 물결이 되어 세계 곳곳으로 퍼져나가 오염된 환경을 치유하고 정치와 이념의 장벽을 뛰어넘어 평화를 전파하는 광주의 메시지가 잘 전달된 것으로 평가받고 있다고 설명했다.
- 특히 이날 개회식에 5000명이 넘는 관람객이 함께 했지만 성숙한 시민의식과 완벽한 준비로 작은 사건이나 사고 하나도 없이 안전하고 질서있게 개최됐다고 평가했다.
이 위원장은 또 “광주대회는 가장 모범적이고 성공적인 ‘저비용 고효율대회’로 스포츠 역사에 기록될 것이다”고 확신했다.
- “광주세계수영대회는 역대 어느 대회보다도 적은 예산으로 준비했음에도 불구하고, 최첨단 시설의 경기장, 최적화된 서비스를 제공하는 선수촌, 시민들이 함께 만들어가는 문화예술행사 등으로 새로운 기록에 도전하는 선수단과 광주를 찾는 방문객들에게 최고의 서비스를 제공하고 있다”고 밝혔다.
- 특히 “광주대회는 기존 시설을 최대한 활용하고 과도한 투자를 지양해 대회 개최 후 시설의 활용문제나 부채 증가로 인한 재정부담 증가 문제가 전혀 발생하지 않는다”고 전했다.
이용섭 위원장은 “이번 대회가 ‘수영도시 광주’ ‘수영강국 대한민국’으로 발전하는 전기가 되도록 하겠다”는 점을 분명히 했다.
- 그는 “대한민국은 이번 세계수영대회 개최로 세계에서 4번째로 세계 5대 메가 스포츠대회를 모두 개최한 국가가 된다”면서 “이번 대회가 일회성 행사로 끝나지 않고 지속적으로 긍정적 효과를 가져 올 수 있도록 실효성 있는 유산사업(레거시사업)을 추진해 ‘수영도시 광주’ ‘수영강국 대한민국’으로 발전하는 전기가 되도록 할 것이다”고 약속했다.
이용섭 위원장은 “이번 여름 휴가는 광주에서 광주수영대회를 관람하시면서 우리 선수들과 대회 성공에 힘을 보태주시고, 다른 한편에서는 의향 광주의 정의로움, 예향 광주의 전통문화예술, 미향 광주의 맛깔스러운 음식도 즐기시기를 부탁드린다”고 광주방문과 관람을 요청했다.
또한 “세계수영대회는 전 세계 10억명 이상이 TV를 통해 경기를 시청할 정도로 세계의 이목이 집중되는 대회이다”면서 “언론인 여러분이 대회 기간 동안 불편 없이 취재하고 이곳 현장을 생생하게 보도할 수 있도록 아낌없이 지원하겠다”고 약속했다.
이 위원장은 끝으로 “내일(15일) 저녁에는 그동안의 노고에 감사드리고 소통하기 위해 이곳에서 미디어 웰컴행사를 개최하고자 한다”면서 “많은 분들과 즐겁게 교류하는 시간 갖기를 희망한다”고 말했다.
이어 훌리오 마글리오네 국제수영연맹 회장도 “광주세계수영선수권대회가 성공할 것으로 확신한다”고 단언했다.
- 그는 성공을 확신하는 첫 번째 이유로 이전 참가국 기록인 2015년 카잔대회 184개국을 훨씬 뛰어넘는 194개국이란 역대 최대 규모를 꼽았다. 또한 대회 역사상 처음으로 비치수구경기가 시범종목으로 선보이게 된다고 밝혔다.
- 대회 준비와 운영 부분도 만족감을 표시했다.
그는 “경기장은 훌륭하고 TV 제작도 놀라우며, 대한민국 국민들의 환대가 국제수영연맹 가족들이 마치 집에 와있는 것 같은 편안함을 느끼게 한다”고 고마움을 표시했다.
- 또한 “수천명의 사람들이 경기장을 찾고 있으며 전 세계 수백만 명의 사람들이 TV와 인터넷을 통해 경기를 보고 있다”고 덧붙였다.
마글리오네 회장은 “오늘 이 자리를 통해 대한민국 정부, 광주광역시 이용섭 시장님, 대한수영연맹, 조직위원회에 FINA 세계수영선수권대회의 성공적인 개최를 위해 보여주신 열정과 지원에 감사를 표명한다”고 밝혔다.
이어 “광주대회는 잊지 못할 축제가 될 것이며, 이는 한국의 젊은이들에게도 강한 레거시를 남길 것이다”고 말하고 “많은 분들이 선수들의 멋진 경기를 보며 영감을 얻고 또 TV와 인터넷을 통해 수영종목의 매력을 느끼게 될 것이다”고 밝혔다.
그는 끝으로 “대회를 취재하시는 미디어분들께서 기사, 사진, 영상, 사이트 등을 통해 전 세계에 영감을 주셔서 감사하다”고 거듭 고마움을 표시했다.

Dear foreign and domestic media!
First of all, I would like to convey my deepest respect and appreciation to our partner FINA for all their help and support in the preparations for the Championships. We are very happy for our strong collaboration. Thank you to President Dr. Maglione, Executive Director Cornel Marculescu and the entire FINA team for their guidance.
I would also like to thank all the media who are devoting their passion to covering the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju despite the hot weather.
We are very happy to have you here with us in Gwangju.
As you know, the competition has already started, with many memorable moments and successes achieved. I hope that we can count on your kind support to deliver the incredible stories from the delegates of the 194 countries present here in Gwangju.
I am sure that you will find incredible stories about the fierce competition in the pool and also the friendship shared outside the pool.

Today I would like to tell you a little more about the Championships and what you can expect during your time here with us.
As you can see we are prepared and ready for the successful hosting of the 2019 World Championships.
These Championships have been essential in our road to success, we have written a new sports history with a record-breaking number of 7,467 athletes and team officials (2,537 athletes) from 194 countries participating.
The Championships are also equipped with excellent conditions to host a successful Championships. Ticket sales have surpassed the target goal set out, in fact we have achieved 102 percent (7.64 billion Korean Won) thanks to the interest and support from the Korean citizens. In addition, a large number of spectators have visited the venues and market street festival, much more than expected for the last two days and we are still in the early stages of the Championships.

I am very proud to share with you some inputs about the Opening Ceremony.
The Opening Ceremony hosted on the evening of 12th July at the Gwangju Women’s University Gymnasium has been evaluated as a successful opening that included quality, artistry and also popularity.
With the theme of ‘Fountain of Light,’ the Opening Ceremony delivered the message of spreading peace while surpassing political beliefs and purifying polluted environment as the water from all around the world was united in Gwangju, the “city of light, human rights and peace,” forming an enormous light and wave that have been spread all over the world.
The Opening Ceremony was fun and also impressive while including various videos and three dimensional effects to display panorama of water. Utilizing the high-tech stage techniques, the Ceremony also presented a 15 meters high aqua graphic and 360 degree large screen to share the imagery of Jeollanam-do Provinc’s taste for the arts.
While the Opening Ceremony was attended by more than 5,000 people, it was hosted in an orderly fashion without any minor incidents or accidents thanks to the cooperation of all the citizens who attended and the thorough preparations.

With regards to the Championships itself. One of our goals was to ensure that the Championships in Gwangju would be remembered as the most successful ‘low cost and high efficiency’ event in the sports history.
Even though the Championships has been prepared with a small budget when compared to the previous editions, it is providing the best services for the delegations, challenging new records and welcoming visitors to Gwangju with the state-of-the-art venues, providing an Athletes’ Village with optimized services and presenting cultural events that are made by local citizens.
*To host the most successful Championships, about 3,000 volunteers and 12,000 Supporters are participating to support the Championships and 1.5 million Gwangju citizens are practicing 10 initiatives concentrated on safety, cleanliness and kindness.
The Championships will not face financial burden coming from post management of the venues or rising debts, as it has utilized the existing venues while avoiding overinvestment.
We will do our best for the Championships to write the history of Gwangju becoming the
‘swim city’ and Korea to become the new ‘swimming powerhouse.’
Hosting the FINA World Championships, Korea has become the fourth nation that has hosted all five major global sporting events including the Summer Olympics, the Winter Olympics, the FIFA World Cup and the World Athletics Championships.
In order for the Championships to bring lasting positive effects, we will carry out effective legacy projects in order for Gwangju to develop into a ‘swim city’ to ensure that Korea can become one of the strongest countries in swimming in the future.

To the citizens of Korea, I would like to ask for the their kind cooperation.
For this year’s summer vacation, we ask that you please come to Gwangju to see the Championships and support our athletes as well as the success of the event. Please also enjoy the righteousness, traditional culture and art and exquisite cuisine of Gwangju while you stay.
I would like to sincerely congratulate Ms. Kim Suji for earning the first medal in the history of Korean diving. I would like to cordially ask for the citizens of Korea to continue supporting our national interest so many star athletes can be born at the Championships.
